We know you're excited to get out on the Vermilion River — we are too! Before you go, there are a few things to consider. This page will help you prepare for the best experience possible. Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.
Note: Vermilion River Adventures is not liable for personal items that may get lost or damaged on the river. You will be in motion near water, and you and your belongings will likely get wet. Place smartphones, cameras, and electronics in waterproof bags or containers. These are available for a small additional rental fee.
What to Wear
- Clothing: Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. Wear quick-drying clothes and avoid cotton. Bring an extra set in a waterproof bag.
- Water shoes: Footwear that can get wet and provides good grip on slippery surfaces. Sandals and flip-flops don't count.
- Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and a hat.
- Gloves: Paddling gloves can help prevent blisters and protect your hands.
Safety Equipment
Vermilion River Adventures provides all safety equipment. Every guest will be fitted with a proper USCG-approved personal flotation device (PFD) before departure. All watercraft are equipped with a first aid kit, compass, and whistle or air horn. See our Boater Safety page for more information.
Food and Water
- Water: Bring enough for the entire trip, plus extra. We strongly encourage a wearable water dispenser or reusable bottle. This is especially important for the float trip, as there is nowhere to stop for a refill on the river.
- Snacks and meals: High-energy, easy-to-pack foods like nuts, granola bars, and sandwiches.
Miscellaneous Gear
- Dry bags: For keeping personal items and electronics dry.
- Insect repellent: Especially important in the early morning or late evening.
- Personal first aid: Each vessel includes a standard kit, but bring any personal medications, insect sting relief, or hygiene items you may need.
- Camera or smartphone: For capturing memories — preferably waterproof or in a waterproof case.
Before You Go
- Check weather and water conditions: Review the weather forecast and current water conditions before heading out.
- Know the route: Be familiar with potential hazards and landing spots. We'll alert you to any known hazards at departure. The Vermilion is a small, constantly changing river with occasional deadfall and submerged trees.
- Leave an itinerary: Share your plan with someone not on the trip, including your route, expected return time, and our contact information.
- Warm up: Do some physical warm-up exercises before paddling to prevent muscle injuries.
- Complete safety training: Review the Boater Safety page before your trip, or plan to complete it on arrival.
Environmental Responsibility
Please pack out all trash and minimize your impact on the river environment. Do not litter. Keep the Vermilion River beautiful for everyone. Be wildlife-aware and respect the animals and habitats you encounter.
Fishing Tips
Planning to fish? Bring your own gear, tackle, and a valid Illinois fishing license (available online for residents and non-residents). A lightweight rod and reel combo works well from a kayak. Include a variety of hooks, lures, and extra fishing line for snags.
